Happening Right Now: GiveBack DC 2012
Last night, 35 of DC’s top creative and technical volunteers showed up to The Web Development Group’s office in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia for what many have deemed a nearly impossible task: building three websites from the ground-up in 72 hours. Nearly 70 volunteers applied to be a part of this great event. The carefully vetted and hand-selected volunteers represent the best of creative and technical talent in the DC area.
These volunteers were divided up in three teams to build new WordPress powered websites for local nonprofits in the GiveBack DC initiative. Over 40 non-profit organizations applied for this amazing opportunity and the competition was fierce. It came down to financial status (based on 990), current web presence, and the power a new web presence will have in spreading the organization’s reach.
The selected organizations are: Borromeo Housing, DC Diaper Bank, and Phoenix Bikes.
The new webdesigns have been finalized, and the development is underway! Currently, WDG offices are full of volunteers, energy, and coding. They just finished up a quick lunch of sandwiches from Chadwick’s and Bruegger’s Bagels and are back at their computers. We are expecting to launch tomorrow afternoon, beating our deadline of 72 hours. All teams will be here late into the night and back at it again early in the morning. This is a great opportunity for local nonprofits, developers, designers, and strategists.
