Responsive Web Design
When it comes to web development and design, we here at WDG work hard to make sure we are always at the top of our game. It was not too long ago that the idea of needing a “mobile” version of your website was out of the norm. And now? More often than not, companies aim for a responsive web design, focusing first on mobile. The concept of having only a desktop-friendly website is outdated, and can be quite the turn-off for potential ROI and customers given that the majority of users now visit sites for the first time on their smart phones.
In order to reach your clientele as often as possible, it’s necessary to provide a user-friendly experience on all fronts of web-browsing, from desktops to smartphones and tablets. You may be familiar with sites that are made specifically for mobile devices – they’re typically the hyperlinks that start with, “http://m.” followed by the rest of the site’s URL. This direction in mobile design has already taken a back seat to the newest in web design: Responsive Design.
Websites that are made with responsive design allow for easy transition from desktop to a mobile device. The nice thing about responsive design is that it adjusts your site’s pages to the appropriate screen size and orientation of the device that is accessing the content. This removes the unnecessary need of scrolling that is so commonly associated with mobile sites. When implementing responsive design, the developer chooses how the site needs to be reworked to be viewed properly on a mobile or tablet device.
The developers at WDG have been working with responsive design since its start. We understand how and what elements of a site need to be changed in order to make it compatible with mobile and tablet devices. For example, a lot of our clients’ new responsive sites have drop-down menus that are activated when the user hovers over the menu title. Obviously, on mobile devices you can’t just hover over the text to activate menus. To correct this on mobile, we typically have the menu activate when it is clicked and then have it drop-down. Another great thing about responsive design is that you don’t have to sacrifice any elements from the site when it is viewed on a computer. Certain features are manipulated, but only when viewed on a mobile device.
At WDG, we incorporate responsive web design into all of our Drupal and WordPress sites. Get in touch with us if you want to talk to the web design experts at Web Development Group about implementing responsive design on your site.
